My research expertise lies in the intersections of gender, governance, policy, science, and/or sport, particularly the governance and representations of women athletes in policy and media. While I largely focus on the international and professional sporting levels, the impact of such policies (and media representations) extends to other/lower levels of sport (e.g., grassroots, youth, college).

I am also interested in the politics of science, in the context of policymaking. In other words, how scientific evidence is chosen, interpreted, and incorporated into policy texts, and the consequences of these scientifically-informed policies. With this focus, my research looks to reveal how decisions are made with regards to prioritizing some types of science over others, how the findings from scientific studies are extrapolated or re/mis-interpreted in certain circumstances, and/or how policies are developed for topics that lack scientific conclusivity.

In all, my research focuses on four areas:

  1. Creating scientific knowledge for policies policing the women’s category;

  2. Incorporating scientific knowledge into policies policing the women’s category;

  3. Governance implications of scientifically-informed policies;

  4. Mediated constructions of women athletes.
